“...You will continue in old ways of thinking until you decide to build your life on the Word of God...”
James 1:21: Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
James doesn’t speak about the eternal salvation. If you have received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, you are going to heaven, and you are saved. In the moment you invited Jesus into your heart, in that moment the book of Life was opened, and your name was written down. If you have confessed Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, you are saved because of His mercy. James writes this letter to the Christians and he is not talking about the new burth experience. He is talking about your soul need to be saved from bad habits. He says with other words that your soul has to be in harmony with the Word of God. The Word of God makes us disciplined: The Word of God teaches us that the humans consist of three things: spirit, soul and body. You are a spirit which has a soul, and lives in a body. Your Spirit and soul will live in all eternity, but your body will one day be buried. Your Spirit is saved in the moment you receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your soul has to be renewed through the influence of the Word. James doesn’t speak about your Spirit but about your soul. When you receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, your Spirit is born again. The Holy Spirit comes into your heart and you are saved and “on the way to heaven.” Your Spirit is born again, and it’s now the lifelong work with changing the way of thinking starts. A lot of people experience that they have two different meanings about the same case. I once heard a Christian brother said: “It’s like I’m having an angel on one of my shoulders and a devil on the other.” This is exactly what James is talking about. Your soul must be disciplined to be in harmony with the Word. He gives us the keys to kick out the devil and let the angel stay. James says in a way that our soul must be set free from the old way of thinking. The devil is not the problem, but your old way of thinking! Jesus won the victory over the devil when he died at the cross. He is not the problem anymore. God has given us the power to win the victory over our sins. It will never let Jesus be Lord by itself. Your Spirit (the inner man, your real self) is holy and perfect in the eyes of God, but your soul must be renewed. Paul also speaks about the soul when he says: “He does what he doesn’t want, and what he wants, he doesn’t do.” Be awake! Have you discovered how easy it is to speak negative and destructive words? Everybody has experienced this. Think about if you came into a house and all your sisters and brothers from your church were talking. Suddenly the conversation is about one person from the church, and everyone talks about his faith and motives. You also take part in this conversation. When you get home, you feel empty and sad inside and you don’t know what’s wrong. You have probably been involved in what the Bible calls “speaking negative” about someone, even if everything wasn’t said straight out.” Normally you are kind, but now you feel bad after taking part in this conversation. I know a lot of people will recognize themselves now. Another example: Think about this situation: A kind sister from the church calls you and says: “Hi, have you heard about “this sister”, she has got problems in her marriage, her husband is drinking a lot and we have to pray for the situation etc. She wants you to pray for this, which seems nice of her, but the real reason why she called you was that she wanted to spread the “bad news”. Suddenly you sit and talk for hours about the person with problems in her marriage. After the conversation is over, you feel empty inside. You have done this bad thing again. If the person that called you really was concerned about the person with the problems, she would have contacted her pastor and spoken with him alone. You are impacted by your surroundings: I could have given you a lot of examples like this. This happens daily in a lot of Christian congregations. What is this? Our soul turns back to old ways of thinking. Our soul can very easy be led by the people we hang out with if we are not awake. If your friends love gossip, then you will be like them. If you hang out with people who love to speak negative, then there is a big chance that you will be one of the main persons among the negative ones, so be awake! If you are with people that always speak negative, then you will be impacted by that and will finally become the worst of them. It’s important to be awake! If your surroundings speak a lot of doubt, you can be impacted by that and become a bigger doubter than “Tomas the doubter”. We are impacted by the people we hang out with, this is the truth if we like it or not, so be awake! Break out! You can break out of this! How? To get rid of all your friends and people you know? No! Well, you might have to get rid of some of your friends which after all weren’t your friends anyway. Sometimes you have to stop the relationship with certain people or bad friends, to save your own “life of faith”. You have to take a decision to let the Word start to impact you. James says: “The Word of God” has power to save your soul by that we receive it willingly. There is a wonderful way out of the gossip and concerning, and into the Word and Spiritual freedom. The way to salvation from all this is to build your life on the Word. Read the Bible: Let the Word of God impact your soul and your way of thinking! When you are impacted by the Word, there is no power that can tare down your faith. Your life has gotten a voice that exceeds all other voices, God’s living Word, and you will also start to impact your surroundings. People will notice this and you will have an attractive force on them. Have you noticed that positive people are an attractive force on you? You will automatically speak positive in their presence, as long as you let yourself be impacted by them. I have a friend that teaches me a lot. Sometimes he is so positive that it irritates me. Whenever you call him he is positive. He is so positive that you sometimes think about if he is normal. If you are going to complain, speak doubt or be negative, he is quiet, he is not the right person to call if you want to speak gossip. Are you going to speak about faith, signs and miracles and about the victory of the Kingdom of God, then the connection is restored. Friends like this are precious as gold and you have to keep in touch with them, or become a friend like this for someone else! I also know that this man use a lot of time reading the Word of God. Two worlds: Have you discovered that positive people, irritates the negative? Why? They operate in two totally different worlds. A positive person doesn’t like a negative person; a negative person doesn’t like to hang out with a positive person. They live at different planets. Reconsider if all people stopped complaining or concerning about everything, what would they have been talking about at work? An irritating question, I believe. The way to set your soul free: Did you know that the Bible is not just an ordinary book you borrow from the library? The Word is powerful and living. What James really says in his letter is: “Read the word then your soul will be set free. “ What other powers can’t do, the Word of God can do. You can have therapy for years; you can attend thousands of personal development courses and still be at the same level in your life. You can have people praying for you forever hoping to become a better person, but nothing will help you as long as you negotiate the word. You can’t get rid of bad temperament or negative way of thinking by prayer, or old habits. You can’t stop your tongue, but luckily there is an exit even here. The changing mirror: Read the Word, suddenly the faith will be there. Read the Word, and God will release you from your bad habits. The Word of God is like a mirror, the more you look into it, the more beautiful you become. You can pull yourself together for years and try to become a better human, but nothing will help you as long as you don’t take the Word of God seriously. You don’t get bigger faith if somebody prays for you. A lot of people call me and ask me to pray for their faith to increase. This is not Biblical. They are honest people, and I understand their problem, but can’t help them. No human can pray to God for bigger faith. You don’t find this written in the Word. If it had been as easy as that to receive faith, all churches and prayer houses would have been filled up with people with enormous faith and Jesus had been coming back a long time ago because the earth had been evangelized a hundred times. All honest Christians want to have bigger faith, but we can’t pray for it anyhow big our motives are. There is only one way to faith, that you willingly receive the word which is planted in you. The faith doesn’t come through getting prayer but through the Word of God. The prayer answer for bigger faith is the living Word of God, which you find in the Bible. The way to greater faith in God is not more mysterious than that we start reading the Bible and join a fellowship or church where they preach about faith. Not all people have the possibility to listen to preaches about faith, then one have to be disciplined to study the Word, most people have a CD player and it’s possible to order CD`s. If you don’t have any possibilities, the best way is to read the Bible. Read it every day! One man asked Smith Wigglesworth which book he recommended to read about the topic-healing. Then Smith answered: “What’s wrong with the Bible since you don’t read it?” You have to let God start a process in you which will last the whole life. You can’t change years of wrong habits in one day, but you can decide to let the word change you and start the process already today. There is only one way to have faith, that you willingly receive the Word which is planted in you. The faith doesn’t come through prayers, but through the Word of God. The Word of God is the only power in the universe, which has power to change your way of thinking and your way of speaking. You don’t manage to take control over your tongue? If you have tried, you’ve already discovered this. Your tongue reflects your soul. If you have got problems controlling your tongue, you have to find the root of the problem, which is your soul. Your tongue can only speak what your soul has programmed it to speak. Remember to read the Word of God because it will change your heart. Let it be deep-rooted in you and let it start to impact your soul. Then your tongue automatically will follow your soul. A positive soul has a positive tongue. The way to bigger faith There is only one way to increase your faith, it’s to receive the Word and let it take root in your heart. James says we must willingly receive the Word which is planted in our hearts. Now you also have to let the Word be rooted in your heart. God can plant a lot of seeds of miracles inside you, but nothing happens before you let it be rooted in you. How does the Word be rooted in our hearts? By that we allow it to do it! The key is to actively confess the Word. The tongue must be disciplined to be in harmony with the Word of God “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen” 1. Pet.4:11 Is there other ways that the word can be rooted in us? By that we meditate it. We meditate the Word, and confess (Read: speak loud to ourselves or God) the Word. The solution is right beneath your nose, in your mouth and in your heart. Jesus said that what your heart is filled with the tongue speaks. If your heart is filled with the Word of God, your mouth automatically speaks the Word, and when it does, your tongue speaks what the Word says, Mark. 11:23 Let’s see what the psalms say about it: Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season. Whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper. Psalms 1:1-3 Confess the Word! To be changed by the Word is to confess the word. You can know about the word, but it doesn’t help you before you start reading it. You will not be clean, if you know about the soap in the bathroom; you will have to use it. It’s the same with the word! Take time reading the word, have a goal, read the Bible every day, if you haven’t time to read a lot, read at least one verse. Read the word and meditate it as often as possible. The Word of God is like bread. You need it daily. You eat bread daily to get energy for your body, not always because you love bread, but it’s important so you will live. You ought to take the Word of God as serious as the bread you eat. We have to read the Word daily so the life of the Spirit and Soul will be formed in the image of God and that it will increase. When you make it a good habit, you will discover that the word of God starts to influence you. You will discover that you change the way of speaking. You will be more in disharmony with your surroundings, and in harmony with God. You will not anymore be lead by all of your feelings and surroundings. You will be more aware of the negative way of speaking or speaking disbelief. You will be allergic to it. The only place you will enjoy being is where people are positive and have got faith. Remember, similar birds flies together and similar children play best together. People of faith want to hang out with other people of faith; negative people draw near to negative people. You can take control over your life and break out of the bad habits. The Bible has given us the key: Let your soul receive the energy from the Word. The more you get filled with the word, the more energy your soul will receive. The more your soul is impacted by the Word, the more the Word of faith will come out of your mouth. If your heart is filled with the Word, your tongue will automatically speak faith. If you want your faith to grow, it’s up to you. The more you will eat, the faster you will grow. The more you practice your faith, the more faith you will get. Like in the natural way, if you eat too much, and don’t move, you will be fat. If you just hear the Word and don’t live after it, you will become spiritual fat. The way out of spiritual overweight is to start practice the Word. Spiritual overweight and spiritual starving is two things we have to be aware of. We have to find a way in between where we read the Word and practice the Word, then we will be a person who are balanced and in harmony. That’s why the Bible tells us that we must not only listen to the Word, because we will betray ourselves, but also do what the Word tells us to do. I will talk more about this later on. The healthy rule is to read the Word and practice it, and then you will be healthy and strong. Protection against disbelief Be protected against disbelief, bad habits and destructive ways of thinking by letting the word of God characterize you. You can’t pull yourself together nor try to become a better person. You will continue in old ways of habits and ways of thinking until you decide to let the word of God be rooted in you and let the word save your soul. If you really want to pull yourself together then remember to take more time reading the word. Read the Bible every day, meditate the word and start to confess it. Speak out God’s promises for you. Speak out the word when you pray! When your prayer life is filled with the Word of God, then your prayer answers will soon be there. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. John. 15:7 -What did Jesus say? That we abide in Jesus, but also that the word abide in us. Make a decision today to use more time reading the word, receive it willingly and let it be rooted in you by that you start confessing it. God bless you
