Which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

Evangelist Runar Balto

""...God has left a room in His kingdom, and only you can fill this place...""

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. Woe to you, blind guides, who say, “Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.” Fools and blind! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? And, whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it. Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the altar that sanctifies the gold? Math. 23, 16-19

In these verses we can read that Jesus reprimands the scribes and Pharisees because they glorify the gift instead of the altar. Jesus here says that for God the gift is not as important as it is to keep the altar holy. Jesus also says that to honor the gift before the altar that makes the gift holy, is foolishness. A couple of years ago I met someone who said to me: I’m not important for God, before I have received the healing gifts. I was shocked and tried to get his focus away from this, and told him that the motives of his heart were the most important.

The motives of your heart:

God is more interested in your motives that your gifts. God puts the quality of your life higher than the quantity. Your gift is not as important as your altar. Jesus says that the gift can make us blind, and I think it was exactly this that made the Pharisees and scholars blind. Your heart is your altar. Proverbs 4: 23 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.

When you give your life to Jesus, you give your heart to Him, not your talents or gifts. Your heart is an altar in the eyes of God. Your intelligence is not important for God, but your heart is. It’s not the gift that makes the altar holy, but the altar which makes the gift holy. I asked the person why he wanted the gift of healing, and he answered me honestly: “Because I want to prove that God is with me!

”This sounds nice for a Christian, but to have a gift everything starts in your heart. One who is touched by compassion for souls and does whatever it takes to win them for heaven, automatically becomes a soul winner. Be faithful to the Lord, if you have a big or a small ministry, a strong gift of mercy or no gift or mercy at all. Everything you carry at the altar of your heart, God will receive with thanks. When you walk whole- hearted with God, you will always have God’s attention.

Psalm 4:6 : “Know that the Lord does wonders for those who are faithful to Him. The Lord listens when I cry for him.”

Your ministry doesn’t start with the gifts of mercy.

One who let himself be moved by sick and afflicted people, will automatically have God’s attention and will be anointed for this ministry. A ministry doesn’t start with the gift; it starts with the compassion for the souls! God doesn’t seek people who want the attention for his/her ministry. Your ministry is not that important to him, but your heart is. Keep your heart humble, and He will anoint you.

Neither you, nor I need to prove that we have great ministries and that God is with us, I believe God can do this without our help. You’ll have the gift when you learn to have compassion with the lost people and have compassion with people that are broken in sickness and pain. If we lack this compassion, it’s a good start to pray to God to give you this compassion. Once I didn’t have compassion for people. I was a Christian, went to the Church, but I was totally not interested in other souls. Suddenly one day while I was praying, the Holy Spirit reminded me that I had a weakness in my heart on this area. I did not have any compassion at all. I didn’t care if people were sick, or got lost, if I only were ok, I didn’t care about others.

God rewards honesty:

When the Lord showed me my weakness, I prayed one of the most honest prayers I have ever prayed to God: “Lord, I really don’t care about lost people, the sick and the afflicted once and I wish a quick change, help me God, and give me compassion for people.”

Not long after, I started to see humans everywhere, people who are precious in the eyes of the Lord. Once I went through a hospital, and my heart almost broke with compassion for all the sick people which the doctor couldn’t help. You may think I was depressed? I was not. The joy in the Lord was there, at the same time the compassion was there.

It was then I started to minister to the sick. I couldn’t do anything else, I didn’t have any choice. God’s love forced me. One of the first people I prayed for was set free from a life in a wheelchair. I didn’t heal him.  I can’t even heal a fly if I tried. I’m just a normal person as everybody else. Jesus healed him and I will never in eternity steal the honor from Him.

A mighty woman of God:

One of my role modals, a person I really esteem is the deceased woman of God, Kathryn Kuhlman (1907-1976). She had one prayer: God if you can use a person that is nobody like me, then use this nobody for your glory. (She thought about her imperfection). The Lord anointed her life with a miracle power which lacks comparison in the modern Christian history. She had a broken marriage in her past, and was a person we would have called a failure. Even then, The Lord chose to anoint her. Why? She kept her altar clean. She didn’t have any selfish motives around her ministry or hidden agendas. She was what you saw with your eyes not more or less. She never claimed to be a special person. She was neither pure nor holy in her own strength. She always gave the glory for her success to Jesus Christ.

A broken heart:

Kathryn never made a big deal out of God using her powerfully. Never did she boast over all the miracles that happened in her services. She cried every time when the service was over, because of all the people who never got healed. Her heart broke every time someone left the miracle services without having received healing. This testifies a humble and broken heart that was beating for the suffering world. Kathryn was reflected by the Christian/religious leaders of her time because she was a divorced woman. She was labeled a failure- but so what? The Lord Jesus Christ loved her and wanted to use her and God gave this woman one of the greatest miracle ministries this world has ever seen. Often when Kathryn Kuhlman entered the platform the Holy Spirit fell all over the building. People got baptized in the Spirit even if anyone hadn’t prayed a single prayer.

Rejected by the Pharisees but loved by the people

Immediately as Miss Kuhlman entered the building miracles started to happen. The blind got their vision back; cripples in wheelchairs were healed miraculously. People with deformed limbs got new limbs. The dumb started to speak, the lamb not only walked but they ran. All this happened before anyone had time to pray the healing prayer.

This nobody that was rejected by Christians/religious leaders at this time, exactly her people started to love. They could stand for hours in line to get into her miracle meetings. This nobody that was rejected by the modern and zealous Pharisees of this century, this woman God made into one of his most powerful generals. I have very much respect for people like Kathryn. Whether you are average Joe or King Salomon your High priest is Jesus. You can’t do anything without him. Everything is done by Him and for him. All honors belong to him.

It starts in your heart:

Everything starts in your heart. God looks upon the motives of your heart and not your talents or gifts. God will powerfully support you when your motives are unselfish. It is your heart that sanctifies your gifts of mercy. It is not the gift that sanctifies your ministry. Do you know that you are important to God even though you don’t have any gifts of mercy? It is not the gift that makes you great, neither the size nor how strong your  ministry is. What characterizes great ministries is their self-sacrifice. Jesus said: “I have not come to reign but to serve. “

The honor belongs to God:

Jesus honored the Father 24 hours, day and night. He never said: “Listen to me people, I am a great preacher sent by God”. No, he didn’t do that. Jesus often said: “I never say anything from myself, but I only say what I hear the Father says”.

Jesus never said:” Come and watch, people, I have done a great miracle!” No, he often said:  “I do nothing from myself, but the Father do miracles through me.”A pure heart always wants to honor God and never steal this away from the Lord. You can never steal the glory from the Lord who you love.

Keep your heart pure for out of it spring the issues of life! The joy in the Lord springs from it. Stay in your calling. Let God decide your place in His kingdom. Never step outside this area He has anointed you to; it will only lead you into confusion and depression. You become tired and discouraged when you operate outside your authorization. Let God lead you where He wants you to be.

An over natural authorization from heaven:

Let He give you His authority by that the over natural anointing by the Holy Spirit comes into your life. When you have experienced this, you will be happy in your ministry for Him. All your desire will be to honor Him who has called you. It’s not anymore about you and your great ministry for Him, the only person who mean something for you is the person who gave everything for you, Jesus Christ.

If God has called you into His ministry, He gives you compassion and anointing on that area He has decided that you will be serving in His kingdom. Remember to give God the glory for everything he does in your life and all the gifts of mercy He would give you, then you will succeed and keep the joy in your heart. The happiness in life is not to find the gifts of mercy but to find your place in the Kingdom of God. The happiness in life is not to find a place where you get a lot of attention, the happiness in life is to find a great Saviour, and His name is Jesus.

You are an important person to God:

If you are a successful or unsuccessful in your life, God will never look into your past. God never reminds you of all the bad things you did wrong yesterday. He has a bad memory when he has forgiven you. He doesn’t remember your sins. There are no sins that lead to death except mocking the Holy Spirit. You can find forgiveness for everything. The Lord sees a great opportunity in your future. Your future actually starts today.

Keep your heart clean. Let Jesus put the gifts at the altar of your heart. Every day is a new start. What happened in your past, you can’t change now, don’t let the devil do anything to you to affect you. When you know that God has forgiven all your mistakes, you can decide today to let God make you ready for the future. Rejoice because your name is written in the Book of Life, and that you first and foremost are saved by His mercy, and let Him anoint you with the gifts you need to serve other people. You are an important person to God; don’t let anyone make you believe that you’re not. You are unique, and God has saved a place for you in His kingdom, and only you can fill that place. You can pray the same prayer as Kathryn Kuhlman prayed “Take this nothing and use it for your glory! ”Be an altar which God are proud of and let Him sanctify the gift of mercy that He wants to give you. Remember that it is not the gift that sanctifies the altar, but the altar that sanctifies the gift. This altar is your heart.

God bless you!
